Work experience students

Today I had a GCSE student from Cardinal Wiseman School attending my  ECHO clinic. This gave the student the opportunity to learn how we work in hospital outpatient departments. I was interested to learn that the school had given little guidance to the possible career opportunities in medicine and allied professional careers. I hope that the time spent will be useful and the school will benefit from feedback.

Before taking on any work experience I was unsure about which career path I would like to follow. I decided to take on two weeks work experience at Ealing Hospital, in the Cardiology department. Dr. Forbat was kind enough to let me sit in and watch an Echocardiogram whilst he explained to me in detail what was taking place. I feel like I have learned a lot from this. I decided to look into this further on this website and I found it extremely insightful. I strongly feel this website has a lot of useful information regarding many heart problems. I am very thankful to Dr. Forbat for giving me the chance to watch and learn about a number of echocardiograms.

I am delighted you found the visit useful. Let your teachers at your school know how you got on, others might wish to gain a similar experience.

Dear Dr. Forbat My name is Ashleigh Ayles and I am currently in my third and final year of studying Sport and Exercise Science at University of Brighton. As part of a Personal and Professional Development module, I am required to undertake work experience in a chosen field. When I graduate I am hoping to enrol onto the NHS Scientist Training Programme, and as such, would like to gain as much in-hospital experience as possible, either in the form of full work experience or even shadowing for a day or two to gain a wider knowledge into working on a ward. My main interests are cardiology and haematology but I would be willing to accept any experience you have to offer. If you are able to help me with my enquiry, or can tell me who I need to speak to regarding this, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you for your help, I look forward to hearing from you Your sincerely, Ashleigh Ayles

Dear Ashley, I have only just seen this as the comments did not get forwarded from my site as expected. If you are still requiring advice and want work experience on a ward, then I advise you could contact the department of Cardiology at your local Cardiothoracic Centre. If you have one in mind and want help, please send your CV and I am happy to speak to one of the cardiologists if I know them.
